About this event
Having highly sensitive and skilful touch is a crucial skill for working with birth. Skilled touch helps us to provide comfort, support challenging labours and be effective and efficient in childbirth emergencies. This workshop will give midwives an opportunity to learn and practice important hands on midwifery skills to increase their competence and confidence levels. The workshop is suitable for student midwives, graduate midwives and midwives with many years of experience.
8 hours elective Midwifery Council education.


The crucial skills that will be covered:
- Assessment:
- Abdominal palpation
- Vaginal examinations
- Comfort
- Simple techniques to provide effective pain relief
- Emergencies
- Resolve shoulder dystocia with calm ease
- Respectful neonatal resuscitation
- Birthing the placenta- simple skills that support east placental birth and prevent/ manage hemorrhage after birth.
This workshop will involve practical experiences and touch however there will be no genital touch.
The workshop will be supporting and nurturing building midwives calm and confidence for dealing with childbirth emergencies.

- Vaginal examination
- Resolving shoulder dystocia
- Recognise Different types of Shoulder dystocia and learn simple effective techniques that work
- 13.00 Lunch
- Respectful neonatal resuscitation
- Touch Techniques for the birth of the placenta and bleeding
- 16.00: Afternoon tea
- Touch for comfort
- Debrief and consolation

About Claire Eccleston
Claire is a mother of three beautiful children, an experienced registered midwife, a Spinning Babies® approved trainer and a biodynamic craniosacral therapist, a certified STREAM (Scar Tissue Remediation Education and Management) practitioner and a Sexological bodyworker.
Claire is an experienced midwife and midwifery educator.
She teaches midwifery emergency skills around New Zealand with the New Zealand College of Midwives.Claire brings in experiences.
Claire has managed many childbirth emergencies over her last 23 years attending births, most of those in the home setting.Claire also brings her experience as a Spinning Babies (R) Approved Trainer. Claire has developed Womb Craft (TM) body work combining Craniosacral thereby, post-birth scar remediation and somatic sexology. Claire is the founder of Womb Rhythms an online school offering training in the traditional art ofBirthCraft. Claire teaches Spinning Babies (R) and midwifery emergency skills internationally.
